The Queens of Halloween: Morticia

You may have already received a good dose of history on Morticia Addams from my previous article A Short History of the Addams Family, but the gothic mama is just too damn iconic not to include in my new article series The Queens of Halloween! Originally created as a cartoon in The New Yorker newspaper in 1938 by Charles Addams, the short satirical comic strip was the perfect way to present an alternative to social conventions of the 40's and 50's, but the most iconic presentation of Morticia has to be the one played by Carolyn Jones in the 1964 live action black and white television series. Also starring John Astin as Gomez, Morticia and her husband had a love for the ages - one that is rom

The Queens of Halloween: Elvira

In a brand new series of articles I am putting together, I wanted to introduce you all briefly to the "Queens of Halloween" - the iconic horror characters who carved out a world dripping in dark fabulousness. Today's spotlight comes out the coffin with Elvira, the fictional horror hostess played by American actress Cassandra Peterson. With the tagline "Mistress of the Dark", Elvira appeared on her own TV show Elvira's Movie Macabre in the 50's in a revealing, black, cleavage-enhancing gown, making her way into gothic hearts everywhere with her vampish appearance, quirky and quick-witted personality, and rampant sexuality. Elvira's Movie Macabre was a show that was created to replace a horror

Fangoria x Monster Fest

During the Halloween season, Fangoria x Monster Fest hosted an epic celebration across Australian capital cities with featured screenings of horror movies, paying homage to international cult cinema. Taking on the themes of horror, fantasy, science-fiction, crime, noir, drama, black comedy and erotica, Fangoria x Monster Fest was the perfect way to round out the Halloween season. I was lucky enough to score myself some tickets to the Fangoria x Monster Fest here at the Capitol City Cinemas in Manuka, Canberra. Settling in my popcorn and fellow horror movie lovers a like I was treated to an array of 2019 alternative style horror movies that meet the Fangoria fanbase of lovers of campy gore fl

October 31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - What I Learnt Watching A Horror Movie A Day

You can really learn a lot about yourself by the things you expose yourself to, and setting myself a challenge to watch a horror movie a day for 31 days has definitely exposed me to a lot and forced a lot of introspection. More specifically, here are a few things I learnt while I set about on my 2019 October 31 Day Horror Movie Challenge: My psychologist thinks I shouldn't watch so many horror movies Not necessarily an observation from watching horror movies, but certainly prevalent to the time in which I conducted my 31 Day Horror Movie Challenge. I started going back to a psychologist and when I let slip i was about to watch 31 horror movies in the month he did mention that people who expe

October 31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - The Ones That Made The Cut

Every year to celebrate Halloween I watch at least one horror movie a day every day during the month of October. As I scour my way through gore-filled death scenes and jump scares, I come to find some real standouts when it comes to characters, scenes and movies. Thus, this created my own little awards list - The Ones That Made The Cut. Out of the horror movies I watched in 2019, here are the ones that are worth a damn and why. Please note as well, this article will contain spoilers. Best Death Scene In A Horror Movie: Joey in Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Masters 2018 Winner: Clara and Koldo in Rec 3: Genesis 2017 Winner: Mike in Tucker and Dale Vs Evil A Nightmare on Elm Street is renow

October 31 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 3

Welcome to the third year running of the October 31 Day Horror Movie Challenge! To help celebrate Halloween I started a challenge in October where I would watch at least one horror movie a day for the entire month and chronicle the journey for my readers at This Side of Sanguine. In both 2017 and 2018 I was successful with watching 31 horror movies each day, despite the wane in horror movie availability in 2018. This year, I actually almost didn't make it to watching 31 horror movies due to a lag in horror-movie-watching desire and a long weekend cruise that made movie watching near impossible. But, on the eve of the 31st day I managed to squeeze in the last of the movies. I was determined t
