Iconography: Hecate

Wiccans and witches everywhere will recognise the name of Hecate, a Goddess of Greek Religion and a daughter of the Titan Perses. Hecate is known as the chief goddess presiding over magic and spells, making her one of the sole icons revered for servitude and worship for witches. She is also closely associated with the crossroads, night, light, magic, witchcraft, herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, necromancy and sorcery. First appearing in Hesiod's Theogony in 8th Century BC, Hecate's origins are debated by scholars but deemed one of the main deities worshipped by ancient Athenians alongside Zeus, Hera, Hermes and Apollo. Sometimes also referred to as Hekate, she is an important deity among

Have You Been ALTERed Yet?

In a bit of a surprising twist, I have actually come to realise that short films tend to be way creepier than normal length horror films. I distinctly remember my days of watching TropFest in the park in my hometown and getting freaked out when a little boy goes through a car wash and gets rather fucked up. I think there is something in the cinematography of a short film that makes the horror more effective. There is less time in the movie to build on the drama, so this needs to be done in faster more efficient ways. This gets you to the creepiness faster and is usually visually more appealing and dramatic. This why the horror short film website Alter has to be one of the most astounding ho

The Babysitter 2: Killer Queen Kills The Original

Major Spoilers Ahead: I watched the 2017 horror movie The Babysitter as part of the 2017 31 Day October Horror Movie Challenge and I was pretty down with it. In fact, it one my award that year for Most Surprising Slasher. It was a modern slasher classic, focusing on a young boy named Cole who spies on his babysitter one night after he is supposed to go to bed and discovers she and her group of friends are meddling in occult practices. As Cole struggles to get away from his demonic babysitter, he finds himself in deadly situation after deadly situation. The Babysitter really hits the slasher nail on the head, and what I thought was going to be a terribly made goofy horror actually surprised m

We Need New Feminist Horror Films!

Feminist horror movies are few and far between - in fact there are very limited horror movies I would dub as being feminist at all. All of this goes back to the golden age of Hollywood where straight white males were in control and used their influence to direct the feminist narrative that we have today. The patriarchy ran this shit, and while that's been changing in increasing years since the feminist movement, even with the more feminist focus on equality the most feminist example of a horror movie I can give was only created in 2019 and 2020. Horror follows a very specific patriarchal view and stereotype, down to the horror story basics of the Final Girl and the Slut. The Final Girl, who

The Hygge Witch Handbook!

There are many different kinds of witches that focus their magic on the hearth and home, but Halloween Queen and horror author Courtney Hope has shed a light on a whole new practicing lifestyle – the Hygge Witch. Hygge is the Danish concept of feeling cosy and comfortable, creating a sense of well-being and contentment, and slowing down to enjoy these moments. Courtney has lived her life in the pursuit of hygge – of warm woollen socks by the fire, of cosy nights with a nose in a book and a glass of red wine in hand – but now with the welcoming and peaceful vibration of the home, conducting magical practices have never felt more rewarding and successful. From cleansing and purifying the h

Iconography: Adam and Eve

I have been researching and learning about different icons of religions for some time now and it is hard to go past such well-known icons of Adam and Eve. According to the mythology of creation in Christianity, Adam and Eve are considered to be the first man and women on Earth, created by God after he created the world and all of the plants and animals in it. They are considered to be the original ancestors of human beings today and provides the basis for the doctrines of the fall of man. Introduced in the Book of Genesis of the Hebrew Bible it is stated that God made the first man and woman to look out for the world that God created. While not named, God creates Adam from the dust and homes
