It takes a lot for me to be scared. I'm the type of person who won't jump at jump scares, who will bravely walk around the house with a croquet mallet looking to hit the intruder, and honestly finds joy in watching horror movies. But that doesn't mean I don't get completely scared. There are things out there that terrify me, and to help me get over those fears I thought I would write an article about it.

Deep Water

I never used to be afraid of deep water, and regularly swim and snorkle in the ocean, but in recent years I have found myself contemplating what is found in deep water and it has absolutely boggled my mind. It...

Found Footage horror films are all the rage, and new horror movies are trying to take a more modern approach by utilising camera equipment such as Google Glasses to ease shaky cam holdings. But in a world of smooth cinematography going back to the classic cam horror style certainly has it charms, and nothing sparks the found footage horror like the 2012 anthology V/H/S.

It can be somewhat confusing, as there is not a lot of set up between the anthologies in V/H/S, but the story centers around a group of heinous petty criminals who have been hired to break into a house and get back a V/H/S tape. As they are reco...

Cabins in the woods are an extremely popular setting for a horror movie because they are usually very visually appealing, extreme deaths can occur without alerting the neighbours, and the idea of being stalked in the woods at night is pretty damn terrifying with the amount of wild animals that could be out ready to make a meal of you.

This theme has been very well utilised amongst horror movies, and I thought I would put together a little list for you of some of the best cabin in the woods themed movies out there.

The Cabin in the Woods

You can't talk about a cabin in the woods without talking about Joss Wheden's masterpie...

I was always interested in witchcraft, and how it evolved throughout the years. From the Maleficus Maleficarum to the hysteria on the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, to modern day feminist witches hexing the patriarchy, it's always been a fascinating topic of discovery for me.

But nothing is more synonymous with the word witch than the Salem Witch Trials.

The Salem Witch Trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693, where more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft, and in line with the Maleficus Maleficarum, which depicted witchcraft as the devil's magic, 25 people were executed. It was a time...

There are movies that just ooze a certain type of cinematography. They are dark, blazing red with gore, and well designed. They operate somewhat out of the box, but with connections to popular culture like Superman, World War 2 and 70's TV show Fantasy Island. I don't know to describe these movies, other than epic and a unique twist on popular designs, so instead I will simply provide you a list and you can make up your own genre for these twisted tales.

Brightburn

What is the actual likelihood of a mysterious child coming to Earth and then deciding to save it from the perils of the universe? Honestly, the odds are...

Lilith is a well-known biblical icon, up there with Adam and Eve. In fact, in Jewish mythology, Lilith was actually Adam's first wife before Eve. She was said to be created from the same clay as Adam at the same time, but refused to be subservient to him and was kicked out of the Garden of Eve for having relations with an archangel.

Because of Lilith's stance at refusing to be anything but equal to man, Lilith has taken on a figure of feminist air. She is a strong woman who refuses to take shit from no one and is seen as the religious take on equality between the sexes. Because of her refusal of servitude to men - again...

There is a lot of found footage style horror movies that have been successful in putting the viewer into the horror film, starting from 1999's The Blair Witch Project, and getting a resurgence in 2007 with Paranormal Activity. But there is also a lot of found footage flicks that miss the mark too. To help you avoid those, and settle in for a good scare, I've put together a list of the best found footage horror films out there:

Quarantine

You will see the remake of the Spanish film [Rec] gracing many of my lists because it's just such a damn good movie! Quarantine follows a day in the life of a reporter who is covering a f...

Witches have fascinated and scared the world for centuries, and their depictions of strong, witchy femmes have been characters in TV Shows for ages. Here are some of the best pop culture witches that have ever graced our TV screens:

Piper, Phoebe, Prue Halliwell and Paige Matthews on Charmed

One of the OG of modern pop culture witches, the Halliwell sisters on the long-running TV Show Charmed charmed audiences to the idea of good witches and helped paved the way to creating the witch themed shows we love today. Originally starring Alyssa Milano as the love-lorn free spirited baby sister Phoebe (with the powers of premonit...

Fans of classic TV shows will recognise Fantasy Island as the 1977 show the follows the accounts of visitors at a unique resort island that can fulfil any fantasy requested, but rarely turn out as expected. It had a very H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr Moreau vibe, and The Simpsons fans will recognise the Treehouse of Horror special where guests were turned into animals ala H.G. Wells' novel by the white clad Dr. Hibbert.

There's a lot in the backstory that surrounds the pop culture of Fantasy Island, but this 70's TV show was more of an action/adventure/fantasy show rather than a horror. So when deciding to reboot the sho...

He sounds like a character from Beetlegeuse, but Beelzebub is no smack talking poltergeist. With a name derived from a Philistine God, worshipped sometimes as Ekron, and associated with the Canaanite God Baal, Beezlebub is a predominantly Christian icon, who is sometimes referred to as the Devil and Satan. In Christian demonology, Beelzebub is actually one of the seven princes of Hell, and is second to Lucifer, the actual Devil.

In fact, Beelzebub is actually directly referenced in the bible in Mark 3:22, where the scribes accuse Jesus of driving demons out by the power of Beelzebub, which seeing as he was a demonic enti...
