The Best Pop Culture Witches Of All Time
Witches have fascinated and scared the world for centuries, and their depictions of strong, witchy femmes have been characters in TV Shows for ages. Here are some of the best pop culture witches that have ever graced our TV screens:
Piper, Phoebe, Prue Halliwell and Paige Matthews on Charmed
One of the OG of modern pop culture witches, the Halliwell sisters on the long-running TV Show Charmed charmed audiences to the idea of good witches and helped paved the way to creating the witch themed shows we love today. Originally starring Alyssa Milano as the love-lorn free spirited baby sister Phoebe (with the powers of premonition and empathy), Shannon Doherty as the strong and responsible Prue (who has telekinesis), and Holly Marie Combs as mother hen Piper (with the power to freeze time). The trio discovered their powers and faced down with demons every week until Prue was kicked off the show and Rose McGowen replaced her as the quirky independent half-Whitelighter sister to another mister Paige Matthews. Lasting eight seasons, the Charmed witches still cement themselves as one of the best pop culture witches ever.
Sabrina Spellman from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Sabrina Spellman was first introduced as an iconic OG witch in the 90's TV show Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart as the titular character. While the original Sabrina still maintains its iconic appeal, it's the new Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starring Keiran Shipka that seems to have taken the top spot of best witches. Sabrina is a half human and half witch who lives with her aunts in a morturary and finds herself stuck between her witch life and her mortal friends. It's all non-stop witch adventures, and the Satanic elements makes the whole show darker than the usual witches that grace our screens. Sabrina is the one true witch.
Willow Rosenberg from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Willow started out in 90's titan Buffy the Vampire Slayer as shy and bookish before she started dabbling in witchcraft when the Scooby gang got to college, meeting her soul mate Tara and become a LGBTIQ icon in the TV world. Played by Alyson Hannigan, Willow really only because the badass witch she is known for during her time with Tara, and her dark witch powers made her the left field villain at the end of the spectacular season six, but her expansion into this character was a steady build up that left fans extremely satisfied.
Cordelia Foxx, Madison Montgomery, Zoey Benson and Fiona Goode from American Horror Story: Coven
The third and eighth season of American Horror Story brought together the fabulous deliciousness that Ryan Murphy is known for, focusing on descendents from the Salem witch trials living in a New Orleans boarding home. As they navigate their powers, the leader's search for the new supreme, and a long-standing rivalry against the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, the series is herald as one of the most popular depiction of modern witches with ancient roots.
There are many characters in this TV show, but the stand outs are Fiona Goode (played by Jessica Lange), Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson), Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) and Zoey Benson (Taiass Farmiga) who all bring a unique witchiness to the show. Fiona is the leading Supreme, desperate to maintain her standing in the boarding house and in New Orleans; Cordelia her hearth witch daughter that is afraid to rise to the occasion; Madison a pompous, spoilt starlet who takes witch bitch to the next level, and Zoey is the sweet naive witch with the power to fuck people to death. It's graphic, fucked up, and fabulous, and Coven takes over what it means to be a modern witch.
Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series
There were a lot of badass witch characters in the popular movie and book series, but main character Hermione was by far the raddest witch of them all. One of the smartest and most talented witches in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it is well known that both Harry Potter and Ron Weasley would have died in book one without Hermione's know how, smarts, and abilities. Now that is saying something! Hermione also breaks down walls when it comes to talent, as she is also a pure muggle, meaning that she is completely human! Now if there is any badass witches out there, it would 100% be Hermione from Harry Potter.
Nancy Downs from The Craft
The 90's brought with it some of the most spectacular takes on witches of any genre, and The Craft is pure gold when it comes to it. The Craft is about a coven of witches that are formed at a school and the main antagonist Nancy Downs, played by Fairuza Balk, invokes the spirit of Manon in an attempt to make herself more powerful. Nancy is a well known character for being dangerous and unstable, her gothic look adding to the witchy nature of her rebellious attitude. Nancy and The Craft showed the unstable look of witchy powers, and it is one of the most popular adaptions out there amongst spooky babes everywhere!
